About Kirkwall Airport

Apart from scheduled services to the Scottish mainland and to Shetland, Kirkwall Airport is the base for the original inter-island services introduced and continuously operated by Loganair. Services to island airstrips include the Westray to Papa Westray route which, with a flying time of less than two minutes, is the shortest scheduled air service in the world. The small island airstrips are not managed by HIAL but maintained by Orkney Islands Council. Aircraft operations at Kirkwall are supported by an Air Traffic Control Service while on call services to air ambulance and search and rescue flights are assisted by a Flight Information Officer. An Airport Fire Service is provided on the basis of a Rescue and Fire Fighting Service category 4 airport as detailed in Civil Aviation Publication 168. (Category 5 on request).
